Sky Crawlers

Artist: John Cuevas

Location: 4th Street bridge step

This mural depicts serpents slithering up the 4th street bridge stairs. The concept was inspired by the pre-Columbian mythology of the feathered serpent; also known as Quetzalcoatl (Aztec) & KukulKan (Mayan). The feathered Serpent controlled the wind, the dawn, the arts, crafts and knowledge. The feathered Serpent's greatest ally was Tlaloc, the god of rain. The pre-Columbian gods of art and water inspired Sky Crawlers. The Arts District serpents are slithering skyward to cross the Los Angeles river.  The snakes are painted with dyes & acrylics so that they will have a watercolor effect.
